Telomere Shortening

Linked to Signs of Alzheimer's Disease

Telomere shortening: Linked to Signs of Alzheimer's Disease

As we grow older, the gradual shortening of telomeres can result in numerous age-related health problems, such as Alzheimer’s disease and other neurodegenerative disorders. While practicing healthy lifestyle habits like regular exercise, a well-balanced diet, and stress management can help to slow down the shortening process, they may not always be enough. This is where telomere lengthening supplements can be beneficial to maintain health and prevent Alzheimer’s and other diseases.

Telos95, brought to you by Longevity by Nature, is a telomere supplement that has been clinically proven to promote telomere lengthening and significantly reduce cellular aging. Combat the natural aging process by adding Telos95 to your age-defying arsenal. When combined with proper diet, exercise, and stress reduction practices, you can be more in control of your aging process.

At Longevity by Nature, we take pride in providing innovative, food grade nutraceuticals that are ethically manufactured – without chemicals, ever. What are telomeres?

Telomeres are the protective caps found at the ends of our DNA strands that essentially safeguard our genetic information and chromosomes. Think of telomeres as the plastic caps at the ends of a pair of shoelaces, protecting them from fraying or being damaged. Telomere shortening is a natural part of aging, and this shortening can be linked to a number of age-related conditions and diseases. Understanding telomeres is important for those who prioritize their health, as certain lifestyle factors can affect their length. Unhealthy habits such as smoking, excessive drinking, and a poor diet may expedite the shortening process, increasing the risk of age-related illnesses. Luckily, with the addition of exercise, a healthy diet, and a natural telomere lengthening supplement to your daily routine, you can enhance telomere longevity; in turn, you will enhance your overall health and wellness.

What is Alzheimer’s disease?

Changes to our DNA can be detrimental, leading to degenerative diseases such as Alzheimer’s. Alzheimer’s disease is a condition in which an abnormal accumulation of protein deposits lead to a deterioration of brain cells, eventually leading to a reduction in brain size. As a result, this brain disease causes memory loss, changes in behavior, difficulty communicating, along with many other negative side effects. As the condition progresses, someone who suffers with Alzheimer’s may struggle with daily tasks as simple as eating, cleaning, and self care. With progressive Alzheimer’s, often this person will no longer even recognize their loved ones.

While genetic factors may play a role in some cases of Alzheimer’s disease, it is generally believed that a combination of genetic, environmental, and lifestyle factors contribute to the development of this age-related condition.

What is the link between telomeres and Alzheimer’s disease?

Since telomeres are thought to be the most accurate marker of biological age, naturally, shorter telomeres can be linked to age-related diseases and conditions such as Alzheimer’s.

Over time, the shortening of telomeres causes cells to become unable to divide or function efficiently, which can result in cellular aging and damage to tissues. This damage can lead to cellular senescence. Senescent cells are cells that have stopped dividing and are no longer functioning in the same way as they did before. This change, over a prolonged period, can contribute to Alzheimer’s and other age related conditions.

Research has shown that people with shorter telomeres are more likely to develop Alzheimer’s.

In a recent study, researchers analyzed the length of telomeres in white blood cells and compared the findings with neuroimaging and detailed medical records of participants who have contributed to the UK Biobank. This bio-medical database includes samples from participants, including details about their health and lifestyle habits, as well as follow up information regarding any development of disease or conditions. Researchers studied telomere length from over 31,000 anonymous participants, and compared the data to follow up information regarding any development of Alzheimer’s.

This study showed an apparent correlation between shorter telomere length and increased instances of Alzheimer’s disease or markers of the disease – specifically, the volume of gray matter within the brain, the thickness of cerebral cortex, and the size of the hippocampus.

In summary, Alzheimer’s is a degenerative neurological disease that causes a progressive decline in cognitive and functional abilities. This decline can, in part, be a result of changes and damage to DNA. Telomeres are protective end caps of DNA on the ends of each chromosome that protect your DNA from these harmful changes. As telomere length shortens, you are more susceptible to age related disease and illnesses such as Alzheimer’s.

Closing thoughts

Although further research is needed regarding the link between telomeres and Alzheimer’s disease, there has been a scientific awakening in recent years regarding the effects of telomere length in general, and we expect to see more and more corroborating information in the near future. This information is expected to assist in developing strategies to prevent and treat this devastating disease. Although there are not currently any available treatments of Alzheimer’s disease, there are preventative measures that can be taken.
